Cyclone Ockhi claims 14 lives in the Lakshwadeep islands

Cyclone Ockhi has claimed as many as 14 lives in the Lakshwadeep islands as well as hundreds of fishermen feared trapped. Cyclon Ockhi on Saturday also drenched the neighbouring states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

According to the sources in the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Coast Guard and Navy have succeeded in rescuing more than 223 fishermen and evacuated thousands of people from cyclone hit areas.
While, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, assuring him of support operations as well as the necessary funds, according to local media reports.
According to Indian Meteorological Department, “Ockhi is expected to travel north towards Mumbai and Gujarat in the next 48 hours, though it is likely to lose intensity. It said that the intensity of the wind may come down and the cyclone could change into depression. IMD has warned the fishermen not go to the sea for the next few days as waves are likely to be 3-5 metres high due to the cyclon Ockhi.
